WPCredits Final Report: My Journey Contributing to WordPress.tv Captions and Subtitles

Hello everyone! I’m Valeria Montoya Arce, and I’m pleased to share my final report from the WPCredits course. This report summarizes my contributions to the WordPress.tv Captions and Subtitles team, the challenges I faced, and the skills I acquired throughout this transformative academic experience. I hope my journey inspires others to contribute to open-source projects and discover the power of collaborative development.

Teams and Projects I Contributed To

Team: WordPress.tv Captions and Subtitles Team

Project Focus: I focused on translating and creating Spanish-language subtitles for WordPress.tv educational videos. My specific contribution involved working with TTML (Timed Text Markup Language) files to provide accurate, accessible subtitles for Spanish-speaking audiences. This work directly supports the WordPress community’s mission to make educational content accessible to people worldwide, regardless of language barriers.

Specific Achievement: I successfully translated and had approved the Spanish subtitles for the video “Thank You to Everyone Who Loves WAPUU!” published on WordPress.tv (https://wordpress.tv/2026/04/21/thank-you-to-everyone-who-loves-wapuu/). This contribution ensures that Spanish-speaking viewers can fully engage with WordPress community content.

Challenges and Solutions

Challenge 1: Understanding TTML File Structure

Problem: When I first encountered TTML files, I didn’t fully understand the XML-based format, the timing synchronization, and which elements could be modified without breaking the file.

Solution: I studied the TTML documentation thoroughly, analyzed existing translated files as examples, and practiced on test files before submitting my actual contribution. I also asked clarifying questions in the Slack channel and received helpful guidance from experienced contributors.

Challenge 2: Balancing Technical Accuracy with Natural Translation

Problem: Translating subtitles requires more than word-for-word conversion. I had to maintain the original meaning while ensuring the Spanish text fit within the timing constraints and sounded natural to native speakers.

Solution: I reviewed my translations multiple times, paying attention to context and cultural nuances. I consulted with Spanish-speaking colleagues to verify terminology and readability. I learned that quality translation is an iterative process that requires patience and attention to detail.

Challenge 3: Managing Time Across Multiple Platforms

Problem: Balancing the WPCredits course requirements, my university studies, and the contribution workflow across WordPress.org, WordPress.tv, Slack, and Learn WordPress was challenging.

Solution: I created a structured schedule, updated my personal tracking form weekly, and documented my progress consistently. This organization helped me stay on track and provided clear evidence of my contributions for the final evaluation.
